In October 2013 Health Minister Edwin Poots MLA and Olympian Dame Mary Peters jointly opened LaganView's gym. element
The community gym was one of the key elements in a new healthy living initiative for people within the Lisburn area, which was led by Resurgam, to improve the health and wellbeing of the whole community and reduce health inequalities.
The gym is jointly funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Resurgam Community Development Trust and offers the people of Lisburn an opportunity to train and exercise in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
The gym formed part of an innovative programme to respond to a number of issues identified in the ‘The Best for Every Child’ research report studying deprived areas of Lisburn and published in 2012.
These pointed to the need to tackle long-term poor health and quality of life across the population as a whole. The development of the community gym, which will be a part of this initiative, will offer a number of exercise stations which will provide a mix of cardiovascular, strength and toning workouts.
At the 2013 launch, Chief Executive of the PHA Dr Eddie Rooney said: “The Public Health Agency is delighted to support this community gym in the heart of Old Warren. This is exactly the kind of local action that the PHA is keen to support, in order to promote healthier living. Together with the Resurgam Trust, over the past year we have developed a major work programme to address needs in this area. This new initiative represents a milestone in collaborative working to improve the health and wellbeing of the whole community.”
The gym currently consists of three separate spaces; the main weights/resistance room is located on the ground floor with access through the main door of Workshop Unit 1. Upstairs are two smaller rooms, one consisting solely of cardio machines and the other room containing a mix of cardio and resistance equipment. By moving the resistance room downstairs this will give the gym an opportunity to invest in more equipment when the time arises.
The gym’s revised opening hours are now Monday- Friday 8am-8pm. To book your induction please contact our fitness instructor, Carl Kilcullen on 07599925372 or 028 9252 8139. Alternatively you can email email@example.com
